A Newly Emerged Fantasy Basketball Sensation

By Jason Jordan

It happens on an annual basis, without fail. There are always a few NBA players who emerge during the course of the season, hitting the radar screens of every fantasy basketball GM as they break out.

These are guys you had your eye on at some point in time, and you're still kicking yourself over the fact that you missed the chance to draft them.

During the 08-09 season, players like Tyrus Thomas fit the mold, owned in nearly every league by season's end. How about this year though? With a few months of basketball behind us, it's time to reflect by proclaiming some of the next enduring fantasy forces in the league.

In my mind, it isn't much of a contest this season. I believe that Kevin Love has been the player to stand above the rest of the pack. His stats are invaluable to many fantasy teams in leagues around the world.

At center for the Timberwolves, there's Kevin Love. Not only is he one of the best rebounders in the NBA right now, averaging over 12.5 per game, but his scoring (15+) and his free throw percentage (80%) are both very impressive.

Any center who can shoot 80% from the line is magnificent in that category. A huge bonus that comes with owning Love is the fact that he's averaging over half a three pointer per game.

Love is in rare company here, as one of the only NBA centers to have three point shooting ability. He's also one of the only centers to contribute over a steal per game.

While he was drafted by some teams in the very late rounds, he went undrafted by and large. In addition to this, most of those who drafted him decided to drop him when it was revealed that he'd miss the first month of the season due to injury.

As a result, quite a few lucky GMs around the fantasy world have enjoyed a huge boost from a pleasant surprise. - 31494

Go Jayhawks! University of Kansas Personal Checks

By Alan Plastin

Do you cheer for the University of Kansas Jayhawks? Are you seeking an economical way of showing your school spirit for your beloved college athletic team? If you are, then purchasing University of Kansas personal bank checks is not only a fantastic way of letting everyone know where your dedication lies, but it's an inexpensive means, too.

With the main campus located in Lawrence, the University of Kansas was founded in 1865. Not only the Flagship University for the State, as of 2008; according to the U.S. News & World Report it was also the 18th most popular university in the country.

The school's official mascot is the Jayhawk, a cross between a sparrow hawk and a blue jay. It became a popular word before the Civil War when the Jayhawkers, an abolitionist group, adopted it. Once Kansas became a free state, it became synonymous with the people of the state.

It's the University's men's basketball team that seems to get the most attention, and with good reason. The Jayhawks have garnered 52 conference championships-an NCAA record. Behind Kentucky and North Carolina, it also ranks 3rd all-time in NCAA Division I and it has recurrently been categorized in the AP Top 25 college basketball poll. Kansas has been to the Final Four under more head coaches than any other school and all of their head coaches have taken the team to the Final Four. Only Kentucky and North Carolina have won more titles.

Even though the University of Kansas football team doesn't catch the publicity that their basketball team receives, they have still made it to the Orange Bowl 3 times. During the 2007-2008 seasons, the University obtained the most combined wins by any NCAA Division I program.

Nothing could be simpler than purchasing personal checks if you wish to show off your team spirit for the University of Kansas Jayhawks.

There are basically two kinds of University of Kansas checks to select from. The Kansas Logo checks contain a light blue background with a depiction of the Jayhawk in the center and in the upper left hand corner. You can also find a coordinating debit wallet, checkbook cover, and return labels with these checks.

The #1 Fan Checks for the University of Kansas are also available. These come with one scene that depicts that diehard fan that makes a point to watch every game and doesn't mind to give interviews about their real feelings when it comes to the final outcome. Matching accessories can also be found with these checks.

If the price and inconvenience of going to your local bank kept you from ordering interesting personal checks in the past, then you might be surprised to learn that by ordering your checks from a safe site you can save up to 50%. You just need to have your routing number and checking account number handy so that they can be printed onto your checks. You can usually expect to receive them in around 3-5 days. - 31494

Key Components of a Higher Vertical Jump

By Nate Woodward

The forty-inch vertical jump is an athletic move that draws attention and applause. You may have witnessed it in the form of a basketball dunk or volleyball spike. The vertical jump test is the ultimate standard of measurement of the force a body can produce in a given amount of time i.e. power. The high vertical jump demands an athlete to counteract the forces of gravity by propelling into the air using their entire body.

Olympic lifts and plyometrics offer the best bet for consistent long term development and athletic success but many athletes attempt to improve their vertical through gimmicks like strength shoes or other heavily marketed products on the Internet.

Explosive lifts such as a clean pull or push press, Olympic lifts like the power clean and snatch, old-fashioned weight lifting exercises like back squats, front squats and step-ups, and plyometric exercises such as depth and box jumps are some of the most well-known exercises. Greater motor unit recruitment or faster firing of the motor nerves is required for the muscle contractions it takes to increase the force in vertical jump movements. Increasing muscular coordination and neuromuscular efficiency is one way to realize an increase in the power of a vertical jump, as is an increase in force application.

Front and back squats are essential to increase the partnership of "pulling" and "pushing" muscles, because it helps in developing more power. Olympic style lifts utilize the hips, knees, and ankles in a squatting and explosive extension action for the benefit of muscle coordination. The increased power can be increase endurance to aid in actions like running and jumping for an athlete.

These results indicate of current studies by researchers did not find differences between the exercises [power cleans and squats] if indeed they did exist and many researchers have studied the role of different lifts on improving the vertical jump. The research appears to conclude that using all of the above methods in a periodized approach is the best training protocol and it would appear that all modes of exercise are successful in improving anaerobic power production, but no one lift was more successful than another. - 31494

The Basketball Hoop: Its Story

By Andy Zain

In basketball the points are scored when a player throws a ball into a hoop suspended 10ft above the ground. In the NBA and NWBA the official size of the basketball hoop is 18in (46cm) in diameter. The net that extends from the hoop ranges from 15-18in (38-46cm) in length and is usually made from nylon. The hoop is made from metal, usually steel and in competitive games is connected to a backboard.

Steel is used to create the metal hoop and is usually coated in a powder to protect it. In competitive games it is connected to a backboard.

The peach basket was replaced in 1906 by the metal hoop that we see today. At the beginning spectators could interfere with shots, so the backboard was introduced, to which the hoop was attached. A bonus of this was that players could now score by hitting the backboard at specific angles.

The more expensive hoops for sale are connected to a back plate which houses a spring system. This system allows for the hoop to be manipulated so that it can be pulled down when skills such as a 'slam dunk' are made. Not only does this prevent the hoop from breaking but also makes the skill mentioned above easier to perform. After the skill has been performed the hoop returns to its original position.

Whilst there are loads of colours of hoops available, red is the most popular. 'Break away rims' are a function of more expensive hoop systems. These 'break away rims' can easily be broken off if sufficient force is applied. The advantage of this is that the backboard and back plate are not damaged. It is not difficult to replace these rims either. Generally a reasonable price to pay for good quality replacement rims is $30-$50.

There are many versions of hoops on the general market. The cheaper models that do not include this spring based system start from as little as $20. 00 whereas the spring fitted systems can be as expensive as $300. It is possible to purchase a model where by the hoop, backboard and base are packaged together therefore not requiring a wall to affix the hoop too. These models can range from around $80 to in excess of $600.

Hoops can also be purchased with adjustable poles these allow for customizable height so that younger players are able to play the game with a basket height relative to their own.

Some producers of basketball hoops include Huffy, Lifetime, Spalding and Hybrid although other producers of basketball hoops are available. - 31494
